Advanced historical thinking

Move from description to analysis.

A-level History requires students to handle a large body of knowledge while making precise judgements. Strong answers do not simply recount what happened: they select evidence, weigh explanations and sustain a line of argument. Students can understand a topic yet find it difficult to turn that understanding into a focused essay.

Oscar helps the student see how the elements fit together. Sessions can examine the logic of a question, test possible arguments, improve paragraph structure and explore how evidence supports or challenges a judgement. This makes written work more deliberate and gives revision a clearer purpose.

Areas for development

  • Interpreting the exact demands of a question
  • Building and sustaining an argument
  • Using evidence selectively and precisely
  • Analysing sources and interpretations
  • Planning, timing and reviewing essays
Personalised tuition

Support that responds to current work.

The starting point is the student’s course, recent feedback and priorities. Some students need a dependable essay method; others want to sharpen evaluation, improve time management or organise revision. Lessons adapt as those needs change.

Oscar uses explanation, discussion, modelling and practice. Rather than supplying a formula to copy, he helps students understand why an approach works. Feedback is translated into specific actions so the student can apply it to the next piece of schoolwork and become a more independent historian.

A useful weekly rhythm

Most students have one hour a week. A session may review a recent essay, diagnose one recurring issue, work through a new question and finish with a clear task or method to practise. Close attention can also be given to planning and timed writing as examinations approach.

A-level tuition is £45 per hour. Lessons are offered as online tuition throughout the UK using Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Face-to-face tuition is also available near Leeds.
